How to stay cool and healthy this summer

Summer is a fun time of year with long days, sunny skies and outdoor activities. To make the most of this season, it’s important to remember a few safety tips. These summer tips can help you beat the heat and enjoy all that summer has to offer!

Tip 1: Drink a lot of water
The most important thing you can do in summer is to drink a lot of water. Water helps your body stay cool, clean and not thirsty. If you don't drink enough water, you can get a headache and feel weak or faint. Make sure you drink at least eight cups of water a day. Drink more if you run or sweat a lot. You can also drink other things – like fruit juices, tea or coconut water. Limit alcohol, coffee or soda. These drinks can make you thirstier.

Tip 2: Wear light and loose clothes
Another way to stay cool and comfy in summer is to wear light and loose clothes. Light colors reflect the heat of the sun, while dark colors absorb the heat and make you feel hotter. Loose clothes let air move around your body, while tight clothes keep you hot and can trap sweat. You can also wear hats, sunglasses and sunscreen to keep the sun from hurting your eyes and skin.

Tip 3: Eat light and healthy food

Instead, choose light and healthy food – like salads, sandwiches, soups or grilled veggies. You can also eat the fruits and veggies that grow in summer – like watermelon, berries, cucumber, tomato or corn. These foods have a lot of water, vitamins and good nutrition.

Tip 4: Stay inside during the hottest time of the day
One of the best ways to avoid the heat is to stay inside during the hottest time of the day. Usually, the hottest time is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is very high and bright. You should avoid doing things outside during this time – like walking, biking or gardening. Instead, find a cool place indoors.  If you must go outside, drink a lot of water and wear the right clothes and sunscreen. You can also use a fan, a spray bottle or a wet towel to keep yourself cool .

Tip 5: Have fun and relax
Lastly, don't forget to have fun and relax in summer! Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, be with friends and family or try something new. You can go to the beach, the park, the pool or the movies, read a book, listen to music or visit the museum. Whatever you do, make sure you have a good time.
