Good dental care can keep your whole body healthier.

Daily brushing and flossing help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. It may also protect you from these issues linked to dental health problems:

Respiratory diseases, including pneumonia can develop if bacteria from your mouth enter your lungs.

Endocarditis, an infection of heart valve or heart chamber lining, may develop if germs get into your bloodstream and attach to certain parts of your heart.

Birth and pregnancy complications like low birth weight and premature birth are linked to gum disease.

Certain health conditions can also weaken dental health.
Issues including osteoporosis, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and Alzheimer’s disease are also linked to problems with teeth and gums. Regular brushing, flossing and dental visits can help protect dental health.

Stay healthy all over with good dental hygiene every day.

Practice these recommended steps daily:

  • Brush your teeth for two full minutes, twice a day. Use fluoride toothpaste to protect your teeth, and a brush with soft bristles
  • Floss every day
  • Use mouthwash after brushing and flossing
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months — sooner if bristles are worn
  • Eat a nutritious diet and avoid sugary drinks and foods
  • Get regular dental checkups and cleanings
  • Avoid using tobacco
  • If you have a dental problem, contact your dentist immediately
