What are immunizations and how do they work?
Immunizations, also known as vaccines, are shots created to prevent illness by purposely exposing people to that illness. The idea is to build up your immune system because a strong immune system fights illness. This can help you get better faster—or even avoid sickness in the first place.
People have used this practice of building up the immune system for a very long time, maybe even as early as the 1400s. Over the years, immunizations have sharply reduced the spread of many life-threatening illnesses like polio and smallpox.
Remember, immunizations don’t just protect you. They protect everyone around you. For adults, that means keeping up with the vaccines doctors recommend.
Which ones do you need? If you’re 19 or over, this tool can help you find out: cdc.gov/nip/adultimmsched. However, this quiz doesn’t replace your physician’s advice. Please follow up with your provider.
Children and babies are especially at risk—that’s why immunizations are so important to their health. Check out this schedule of recommended vaccinations for infants and children from birth to 6 years.
Vaccines are essential for helping young people develop healthy immune systems. Check out this schedule of recommended vaccinations for children age 7 to 18. Please make an appointment with your child’s doctor to make sure their immunizations are up to date.
Help them enjoy a healthy August—and beyond!
