Epilepsy is a rare health condition. In 2015, just over one percent of people in the United States had active epilepsy. About 3.4 million people are living with epilepsy across the country. Epilepsy impacts everyone’s life a little differently. Some people may have multiple types of seizures. Others have unique health conditions.
Epilepsy can be controlled through prescribed drugs. Over 70 percent of people with the condition could become seizure-free with the use of drugs. But everyone needs to work together. Successful treatment requires a team effort between patients, providers, family, friends, and care teams.
As we celebrate this Rare Disease Day, we recognize our members living with rare diseases. By working together, we hope to improve the lives of both members and their families.
