Keeping your teeth and gums healthy
Although dental services are not covered through your plan, Molina Healthcare cares about your oral health. Problems with teeth, gums and dentures can greatly affect your wellbeing. Here are a few basic things you can do to keep good oral health.
Dental Checkups
Dental checkups and cleanings are needed every six months. Schedule your child's first dental checkup when the first tooth appears (by one year of age). Visit a dentist two times a year for dental health checkups.
Brush
Brushing removes the film of bacteria that clings to teeth.
- Brush teeth using toothpaste with fluoride at least twice a day
- Brush teeth for about two to three minutes at a time
- Brush after every meal when possible
- Replace your toothbrush with a new brush every three to four months
Floss
Floss your teeth once a day, preferably at night before bed. Flossing helps get rid of food and plaque between teeth where the toothbrush cannot reach.
Rinse
Use an antibacterial mouth rinse. It can reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth that causes plaque and gum disease.
Eat healthy
For healthy teeth and gums, food and drinks should be free of added sugar. Tooth decay or dental carries is related to what you eat. The more you eat sweet foods and drink liquids with lots of sugar, the higher the risk for tooth decay. Eat a variety of healthy foods from all the food groups.
Reduce snacking in between meals
Drink less soda and coffee. The acids in soda can damage the enamel on your teeth. Drinking coffee everyday can stain your teeth.
Smoking and alcohol
If you smoke or chew tobacco, quit. Smoking and chewing tobacco increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancers. Limit alcohol. Drinking alcohol increases the risk for oral cancers.
