Doula Services
Molina Healthcare covers Doula services for our pregnant members. Our goal is a healthy result for both mom and baby.
What is a Doula?
A Doula is a non-medical person. They are trained to give helpful and caring support to pregnant women. They give steady support before, during, and after childbirth. Doulas help pregnant women in their right to make choices about their own bodies and babies. This type of support has been shown to have better birth results for both the mom and baby. Support from a Doula can be given virtually or in person.
How can a Doula help you?
- During pregnancy, a Doula can link you with resources in the community. They can help you come up with a birth plan.
- During labor and delivery, a Doula can give you physical and emotional support. They can help you talk with hospital staff, and make sure your wishes are known. They can also give nonmedical help with labor.
- If there is a loss of pregnancy due to stillbirth, abortion, or miscarriage, the support from a Doula is covered.
How can a Doula help you after you give birth?
A Doula can help you with nursing support, healing, and recovery. They can offer help with baby care for up to 12 months after the baby is born.
Should you use the support of a Doula?
Having the support of a Doula has been shown to lower the chance of having a C-section, using pain meds, and having a better birthing experience.
Your covered Doula services:
- One initial visit.
- Up to eight more visits; these can be a combination of prenatal and postpartum visits.
- Support during labor and delivery (including labor and delivery ending in a stillbirth), abortion, or miscarriage.
- Up to 2 three-hour postpartum visits after the end of the pregnancy.
If you would like the support of a Doula, please email us at MHCDoulaSupport@MolinaHealthcare.com or call our Motherhood Matters Program at (866) 891-2320.
