Children in Custody: Care Management

Every child in foster care is assigned a Molina Care Manager. A Care Manager is ready to help you coordinate medical visits and find other services.

Who are Molina’s Care Managers?

Our Care Managers are nurses and social workers who have experience working with children in custody and children with special health care needs. The Molina team includes Licensed Social Workers and Licensed Nurses with the following expertise:

  • Mental health treatment services such as care management, mental health counseling, and crisis support. These are offered to adults, children, and families in foster care, residential treatment facilities, crisis or trauma centers, and personal homes.
  • Psychiatric crisis services for children and families. This includes coordinating psychiatric hospitalizations, assisting with discharge planning, and completing intakes and referrals for services.
  • Addiction counseling, including teen and child therapy.
  • Pediatric and adult nursing services in hospital, nursing facility and community settings.
  • Nursing services for members with developmental disabilities in school, workshop, and county group home settings.
  • Head Start services for children and families. This includes immunizations, medical, dental, mental health, vision screening, hearing screening, and nutritional services within the set time of federal, state and city guidelines.
  • Domestic violence and human trafficking support program.

What are the benefits of Care Management?

Your Molina Care Manager is a single contact for all your child’s health care needs. Your Care Manager will:

  • Coordinate well child visits, medical equipment needs, medications, and other medical needs.
  • Help schedule the 5-day and 30-day medical screenings required at custody start.
  • Coordinate other services suggested by your child’s primary care provider (PCP), like specialist referrals.
  • Give important information to your child’s doctors.
  • Help get needed medical services approved.

How can foster parents get the most out of the Care Management program?

  • When your child is first assigned a Care Manager, fill out the health care assessment given to you by the Care Manager.
  • Follow up often with your child’s Care Manager. Give them updates about your child’s health and care needs.
  • Call your child’s Care Manager when you have questions or need help getting your child the care they need.

What if my child has complex behavioral health and multisystem needs?

Your child may qualify for the OhioRISE program. OhioRISE (Resilience through Integrated Systems and Excellence) is a specialized managed care program for youth with complex behavioral health and multisystem needs. Behavioral health relates to how a person’s behavior impacts the health of their mind and body. The program is offered to our members in partnership with the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM).

OhioRISE aims to:

  • Expand access to in-home and community-based services
  • Ensure OhioRISE members and families have the tools they need to manage all aspects of their child’s behavioral health care, including:
    • Child protection
    • Developmental disabilities
    • Education
    • Juvenile justice
    • Mental health and substance use disorders
