Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings
An important way to stay healthy is to have regular cancer screenings. Preventive screenings like breast and cervical cancer screenings are vital for your health. Doctor’s offices are taking extra steps to keep you safe during COVID-19.
Breast Cancer Screenings
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. 87 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history.
A breast cancer screening (mammogram) can help find breast cancer before it becomes more serious.
When should you get a breast cancer screening?
- Women ages 40 to 44 can start getting mammograms every year if they wish to do so.
- Women ages 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.
- Women 55 and older should get mammograms every 2 years or can continue yearly screening.
- Anyone who feels a lump or change in their breast tissue should see their doctor for possible testing.
Cervical Cancer Screenings
A cervical cancer screening (pap smear) is important for your health. Test results can find early signs of cervical cancer. This helps doctors treat it early or even prevent cancer before it starts.
When should you get a cervical cancer screening?
- Women ages 21 to 65 should get a pap smear every 3 years.
- If you have a history of a serious pre-cancer, you should keep getting pap smears for at least 25 years after finding the condition, even past the age of 65.
